Third of Brits regret bringing their smartphones on holiday

Smartphones - can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Technology is now so inextricably weaved into our daily lives that we can’t imagine a day going by without a text, Tweet or telephone call featuring in it.

But as much as we Brits are attached to our gadgets there is a niggling part of us that knows we have to pencil some ‘tech-free’ time in order to strike the right balance in our lives. In fact, research from a global survey of 2,495 people by Hotels.com revealed that Brits abroad struggle with the ‘bring, or not to bring’ equation when it comes to taking their smartphones on an overseas break.

While one in three holidaying Brits regrets the amount of time they spent glued to their smartphones once they return to UK shores, mobile phones were listed as the fifth most important travel item only trumped by passport, sun cream, travel insurance and sun glasses. Nearly half (46%) of those surveyed also admitted to checking their work emails while away, while over a third (36%) revealed that they logged into their social media accounts on their so-called ‘breaks’.

Commenting on the research findings, Alison Couper from Hotels.com said: "Going away on holiday should be a time to take stock and unwind, whether you're lying on a beach in the Seychelles or snowboarding down a mountain in Canada.
