A family holiday? We’d rather holiday alone say third of adults

Truly getting away from it all on holiday can be a difficult thing to achieve, especially when the kids are in tow and our range of gadgets are safely stowed away in our hand luggage.

And in order to remedy this situation it seems that UK adults are increasingly opting for child-free breaks that allow them to get that quality couples time they’ve been struggling to book in all year. This is according to the findings of new research conducted by Thomson, which found that just over a third (34%) of parents with children under the age of 18 head off on adults only holidays.

Even those parents who are currently holidaying with their children, would consider leaving their offspring at home the next time they make a getaway, with this proving to be the case for more than half (57%) of those questioned. And what are the main motivations behind this decision? Well according to the research it’s a desire to spend more quality time with their partners for 43%, while 34% admitted they just needed a break from family life.

Further figures from the research show that the peace and quiet of an adults-only holiday break proves a draw for nearly 55% of research respondents, while one in three revealed that they weren’t fans of other people’s children.

So who’s left holding baby? In order to make their dreams of a child-free break a reality many are relying on family and friends to act as babysitters. Just over half (52%) of those questioned leave the kids with the grandparents when they head off on holiday.

Commenting on the research findings, product director Mark Hall said: “Family holidays are undoubtedly a great way to spend time together, but even the most dedicated of parents need time away from their children sometimes. An adults-only holiday can allow couples to reconnect with each other and have a well-deserved break.” If you are planning a summer getaway, it’s important to organise single trip travel insurance in advance.
