Attend a wedding overseas? We’d rather it were on UK shores

While receiving an invite to an overseas wedding may seem glamorous at first, once the cost of attending nuptials abroad are well and truly crunched the shine may soon start to wear off.

A survey from Confused.com revealed that more than half (59%) of those questioned would rather attend a wedding on UK shores rather than in an overseas setting. And with the cost of attending a wedding abroad coming in at an average of £564, compared to £247 for a UK wedding, it’s not hard to see why.

However, one in 10 of those who are happy to pay for the costs of flights, accommodation and more to see their friends and family saying ‘I do’ don’t feel the need to bring a gift to the wedding. One in 10 also believe that the happy couple should stump up to subsidise some of their travel expenses.

However, reluctant guests may want to take into consideration the bride and groom’s reasoning for moving their big day to a foreign location, none of which include intentionally hitting their guest’s wallets hard. These are as follows: 15% of couples planning to marry abroad want to do so to make savings, A quarter want to do it to keep the guest list short, A third want to head overseas to guarantee good weather.

Sammy-Lea Samways, head of travel insurance at Confused.com, said: "The idea of getting away from it all to wed seems to be a popular concept, with the lower cost of an overseas wedding being an important factor for many. However, destination weddings can often be difficult for invited guests because of the price and time involved. It can pose the dilemma of a costly trip abroad versus the desire to see the happy couple get married."

Number of attendees to overseas weddings increasing -Recent research from travel association ABTA number revealed that while financial concerns may abound, the number of those planning a getaway to attend an overseas wedding as a guest or as part of the wedding party is set soar to more than 1.5 million in 2014. If you are planning your dream romantic getaway abroad, it is important to organise single trip travel insurance in advance.
