Been around the world! Under fives already seasoned travellers

When it comes to ticking off your list of must-see destinations from around the globe, few would imagine that this process would start while we were still knee high to a grasshopper.

But that is exactly the case according to the findings of the latest research from the Post Office, which showed that today’s tots have seen a worldwide destination or two before they’ve even reached the age of five. And toddlers holiday region of choice? According to the research Western Europe has been revealed as the best ‘totspot’, with more than a third (38%) of families who have been there on a holiday in the last 12 months taking their 0-5 year olds in tow. The ‘totspot’ ranking continued with the US (16%), East Asia (12%), Canada (8%) and Australia (8%).

Further figures showed that today’s toddlers would give globetrotters from previous generations a run for their money. While more than two-thirds (69%) of parents hadn’t left UK shores by the age of five, more than a fifth (26%) of children had headed off for a spell on foreign shores before they’d blown out five birthday candles.

Prince George has led the way when it comes to intrepid travellers to be reckoned with and has clocked up approximately 31,879 travel miles journeying to far flung destinations with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge including jetting off to Mustique, New Zealand and Australia. In comparison just 10% of little ones had visited such exotic destinations before their fifth birthday.

Commenting on the figures, Paul Havenhand, Head of Insurance, Post Office Travel Insurance, said: “The speed, ease and low-cost of travel today, means families can travel abroad relatively easily compared to a generation ago. Today’s young children are growing up to be the ‘jet set’ generation, with parents viewing foreign travel as an important part of their education, as well as an opportunity for quality family time.”
