EC’s passenger rights app gets an upgrade in time for holiday season

The European Commission (EC) has announced several upgrades to its free passenger rights app, just ahead of the summer holiday season.

The app ensures that passengers are aware of their rights whether they are travelling by plane, train, boat or bus. As well as featuring existing EU rules on passenger rights the app now features three additional languages - Croatian, Serbian and Albanian – bringing the total number of languages available on the app up to 25.

Other additions include new features for the visually impaired. European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for Transport said: "How many of us have wondered whether we are entitled to a compensation or any type of assistance when we experience problems with our journey, whatever means of transportation we chose! Many European travellers do not even know how and where they can get the right information about this. The right of information is one of the basic passenger rights. The smartphone app explains everything in detail, in 25 languages, and wherever, whenever the traveller needs it."

Travellers have downloaded the handy app more than 140,000 times, and can use it to better understand when and where their rights apply in scenarios such as flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding. The upgrade to the app comes just weeks after a recent ruling which means that passengers can claim compensation for flight delays that occurred up to six years ago.

The app forms part of the Commission’s "Your Passenger Rights at Hand" campaign. Until 11 July 2014 the campaign is running a social media thematic week on Passenger Rights on various social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Google+).
