Fly to NYC for £150 - yes really!

Travellers who are fans of the good old U, S of A will be glad to hear that they can head stateside for less thanks to the launch of flights from the capital to America by an up and coming low-cost airline.

Fresh from being named the best value for money airline in a recent Skyscanner survey, Norwegian airlines has announced that it will be launching a range of flight routes to the US from Gatwick airport starting this week. And all this at a price that is likely to keep holidaymakers’ wallets happy.

First announced last year, the routes start from as little as £150 ($255) off-peak each way. In comparison one way flights to US the British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are around £249 at their cheapest. The airline has attributed its low fares to its new fuel-efficient Dreamliner planes, which removes the pressure of only flying planes at full capacity to achieve a profit.

Describing the move as an ‘industry game changer’ Stewart Wingate, the chief executive of Gatwick, said: Norwegian’s decision to operate high quality services on new long range aircraft offering good-value fares to the US from London Gatwick is a significant industry game-changer. “It points to a future in which more and more long haul routes will be served by Gatwick. This is an important industry development that I am sure the Airports Commission will want to look at closely when considering the future shape of aviation.”

He went on to highlight that demand for this type of route is strong: “There's great demand for high quality flights at a low fare between the UK and the U.S., particularly to and from London Gatwick, where no other airline currently offers these routes.”

Speaking last year chief executive of Norwegian airlines, Bjorn Kjos, revealed that he saw the expansion into cheap Trans-Atlantic flights as a natural extension of the airline’s growth into Europe. If you are heading to the US on holiday, it is important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
