Why take more? Brits opt for hassle free hand luggage

Stepping off a plane in your destination of choice can be one of the most exciting parts of the travel experience. However, this excitement often turns to frustration when you are left spending the first few moments of a relaxing break waiting at the luggage carousel.

It’s no wonder then that Brits heading abroad are increasingly opting to take hand luggage on their trips – and this applies whether they are heading on a short city break on a longer stint of sun, sea and sand. This is according to the findings of a survey conducted by www.SendmyBag.com which found that a fifth of Brits heading for an overseas holiday lasting between a week and two weeks long are only flying with hand luggage.

Explaining why they would rather cram their holiday wardrobe and travel essentials into a smaller hand luggage case, just over two-thirds (67%) of Brits revealed that they felt hand luggage was the cheaper option. And with some airlines charging for checked in luggage for flights to short-haul destinations, opting for hand luggage could mean even more money in the holiday spending pot.

Despite the perceived advantages of taking hand luggage on a break abroad, holidaymakers questioned as part of the survey had also encountered their fair share of hand luggage stumbling blocks. Just over a third (34%) of holidaymakers had admitted to being caught out by overstuffed hand luggage, breaching weight restrictions and forcing them to pay out an average of £26.

Commenting on the research, Adam Ewart, Founder of SendmyBag.com, predicted that it won’t be long before airlines begin to impose a charge for hand luggage. He said: “Many holidaymakers are choosing to fly with just hand luggage to save on costs, however airlines are cottoning onto this and some have begun to introduce fares where you pay for your hand luggage separately to your seat. The illusion is that they're breaking down fares so that passengers only pay for what they need, when in fact it's really an extra charge. It won't be long until the majority of airlines begin rolling this out, so even those holidaymakers who consider themselves to be experts at squeezing a week’s worth of clothes into a small holdall won’t be safe from fees for long!”

If you are heading off on holiday, it is important to ensure that you organise travel insurance in advance.
