My holiday destination was too hot and other unbelievable traveller complaints

For some holidaymakers the opportunity to get away from it all with a relaxing overseas break is reason enough to smile. With nothing in the world to worry about apart from securing a sun lounger in a prime position and choosing the perfect location for a sunset cocktail, there really should be no room for complaint.

Try telling that to the travellers calling into the customer service team at Opodo.co.uk, who dug deep to pick holes in what should have been a dream holiday. One customer calling into the customer service line seemed to be completely oblivious to what a holiday abroad entails complaining that it was “too hot,” the food “too spicy” and “hardly anyone spoke English”. Perhaps a staycation may have been more up their street?

When coming to the aid of another traveller whose flight to Miami had been cancelled, customer service staff where befuddled by a request to take the Eurostar instead! One caller claimed to be none other than the Queen, and let customer service staff know that if they didn’t get a free first class trip to Australia that it would be tantamount to treason.

Stephanie Uhlig, UK MD for Opodo, said: “Even with the most unusual of requests, Opodo’s customer services team is always there to help.” Other bizarre complaints include a man who requested Opodo’s help in winning back his girlfriend after she dumped him for mistakenly booking a romantic trip to Rome, Georgia, rather than Rome, Italy. A survey conducted by travel search engine Skyscanner earlier this year also revealed that guests can be irked by the most unusual things.

Sitting at the top of the list of the top ten unusual complaints encountered by hotel staff was a customer bemoaning that ‘the sheets are too white’ while in second place another grumbled that ‘the sea was too blue’. The list of unusual complaints continued with the ‘ice cream was too cold’ in third place, can it be served in any other way?, while ‘the bath was too big’ in fourth place must surely have been uttered by someone who is a fan of ‘bijou’ environs.

If you are planning a break abroad remember that you can snap up last-minute travel insurance.
