Ryanair is our most popular Airline

Ryanair Aircraft

If travellers were asked to name their favourite airline in the entire world, low-cost carrier Ryanair may not be the first to spring to mind. However, while holidaymakers may not have always looked upon the Irish airline favourably throughout its history, figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show that they turn to the airline in droves when making a getaway abroad. The IATA’s Top 100 Airlines: Ranked by Traffic (Passengers) places the budget airline in the top spot, with 81.3m international passengers carried last year.

This puts the airline ahead of 2nd place ranker easyjet (52.7m passengers), Lufthansa in third place with 50.7m passengers and Emirates in 4th place with 43.3m passengers. And in a surprising fifth place in the ranking is iconic British airline BA, with 33.8m passengers. Even more surprising is the fact that Ryanair has more passenger traffic than several airlines combined, as the examples below show: • EasyJet, Iberia and SAS combined (< 76m) • British Airways, Air France and Alitalia combined (< 77m) • Lufthansa and Air Berlin combined (< 74m) • Over 8 times more passengers than Irish regional carrier Aer Lingus (9.6m)

Commenting on the figures, Ryanair’s Robin Kiely, said: “IATA has once again confirmed that Ryanair is the world’s favourite airline, carrying more international scheduled passengers than any other carrier. Even the combined traffic of EasyJet, Iberia and SAS is still less than Ryanair’s total traffic.“Consumers choose Ryanair for our lowest fares, great routes choice and our improving customer experience, including our new website, allocated seating, a free 2nd small carry-on bag allowance and PED (portable electric device) use on all flights, as Ryanair continues to deliver so much more than just the lowest fares for our 81.3m customers.”

Until midnight tonight (June 12th) travellers can snap up one of 100,000 seats for sale across the airline’s European network, at prices from €19.99 for travel in July and August. If you are heading off to the continent on holiday, it is important to organise European travel insurance.
