Strike in Italy leads to flight cancellations

A number of airlines have cancelled inbound and outbound flights to key Italian destinations due to a 24-hour strike by airport ground handling staff starting today (May 30th).The industrial action is set to take place in airports in Milan and Venice, with other staff also planning strike action at Milan’s two airports between 1pm and 5pm local time.

In an effort to give passengers sufficient time to rearrange their travel plans, budget airline Easyjet has cancelled some flights ahead of the walkout.“Like all airlines, easyJet’s flights to and from Milan Malpensa, Venice and Milan Linate airports will be affected and we apologise for any inconvenience caused despite this being beyond the airline’s control,” the airline said.“We strongly advise customers who wish to travel and want to rebook easyJet flights to avoid rebooking flights on the same day as there is some likelihood of further disruption that could cause further cancellations.”

British Airways has also confirmed that is has been forced to cancel a "small number" of flights as a result of the strike. "We are doing all we can to minimise the effects of the industrial action," the airline said. "We have re-timed a number of flights and are also using larger aircraft where possible." It also went on to advise passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving the airport.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this industrial action in Italy will cause and will update our flight information on a regular basis," BA said. Ryanair has also cancelled more than 25 flights to and from Italian airports.

Strike action at various times today is also planned by staff at Alitalia and Meridiana with further industrial action at Italian airports scheduled for the afternoon of June 11th.If you are heading off on an overseas holiday in the coming months, it is important to organise single trip travel insurance in advance.
