Beaches and good eating: just two ingredients that make up the perfect family holiday

With past surveys revealing that the traditional pastime of building a sandcastle still gets the thumbs up from holidaying kids, it comes as no surprise that a beach (43%) takes the number one spot in a top 10 ranking of the essential elements of a British family holiday. Questioning 1,000 parents the Admiral and One Poll survey found good restaurants (35%) were also a key priority for families on holiday, with plenty of dining options acting as the perfect complement to fussy eaters.

The ranking continued with countryside (35%) in third place, followed by sightseeing (32%) and a pub (29%). And while the top five seem to exist purely for adults’ amusement, the rest of the top ten definitely has the kids in mind. This continued with going for walks (28%), a swimming pool (28%), an amusement park (26%), a zoo or animal park (20%) and a castle or historic house (19%).

The survey also revealed why some families would opt for a staycation rather than heading to foreign shores. Topping this list was the ability to get from A to B in their own car (47%), less travel time to reach their holiday destination (34%) and not needing to hop on a flight (34%). Commenting on the research findings, Admiral managing director, Sue Longthorn, said: “I think the list of essential elements would make a brilliant holiday, although it’s a shame that more than one in ten need a TV for their holiday to be complete.

“With regards to the main benefits of holidaying in the UK, it’s interesting to see that the top three are all related to getting to your destination. It’s certainly a big advantage to have your own car and to be able to go when you want. For those with a young family, holidaying nearer to home is particularly good as kids don’t always make the best travel companions on long trips.”

If you are heading off on a family holiday, whether that’s in the UK or abroad, it is important to organise family travel insurance in advance.
