The Towlie: the latest development in the holiday selfie craze

Whatever the backdrop, whatever the location it seems that it’s always an opportune time to take a choice selfie. The motivations are varied – from inspiring envy in those back home to showing the world just how fabulous we look in our designer sunnies. However, there comes a time when we inevitably grow tired of swiping through pictures of ourselves accompanied by nothing more than the lapping of the ocean waves or a sun lounger for company.

The solution to holiday selfie fatigue? Well according to cruisers it’s turning the camera away from our Cheshire cat grins to one of the unsung heroes of breaks abroad– the towelled animal. Many of us have opened our hotel room to find our towels deftly fashioned into members of the animal kingdom – swans being a popular choice – by diligent hotel staff. And just as garden gnomes have risen to stardom as they journey solo around the world, the towlie has also carved out – or rather folded out- a name for itself as a trusted holiday photo companion.

Research conducted by review and planning website Cruise Critic revealed that almost half of UK cruisers (47%) take a 'towlie' (a picture of themselves with their towel animal) on their overseas trip. Commenting on the craze, Adam Coulter, UK editor of Cruise Critic, said: "Towel animals provide huge fun factor in cruising, and with so many people obsessed with the selfie craze, it's apparent why half of our respondents take a picture, or a 'towlie', with their towel animal.

"When you return to your cabin to find a strange, and sometimes unidentifiable creature hanging from the wardrobe or lying on the bed, it provides entertainment – somewhat ashamedly to admit, even for us adults!" Further figures from the survey showed that not all cruisers reached for the camera when confronted with a towlie. 18% spent time scratching their heads to work out what a towlie is, while a sensible 34% used a towlie after their shower.

Wherever you are journeying to on a cruise holiday, it is important to organise specialist travel insurance in advance.
