Travel quiz reveals Brits don’t know their own landscape

Asking British participants to identify the location of key areas, the quiz found that a shocking number mistakenly thought some of their homeland’s main attractions were actually found abroad. Gwynedd in Snowdonia National Park and the Scottish Highlands’ Cairngorms were both thought to be too exotic for the UK with more than one third of people believing they were found elsewhere (39% and 34% respectively). More than one quarter (26%) placed Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean overseas with 34% also disowning the Jurassic Coast’s famous Durdle Door.

Holiday confusion -UK locations weren’t the only areas which left some Brits stumped though – a number of international landscapes also proved difficult to pinpoint. As much as two-thirds of Brits adopted Denmark’s Hundested Harbour as their own with a similar percentage (59%) also claiming Wyoming’s Lake Solitude as one for the Brits. This survey, which was conducted by Sykes Cottages, shows similar results to an earlier poll on famous landmarks conducted by Hotels.com. The results from this previous quiz revealed that more than half of travellers were unaware that the Colosseum was found in Rome while 39% couldn’t identify the famous Christ the Redeemer statue as Brazilian.

Reason to explore the UK -Speaking about the recent findings from their quiz, Tom Lowes of Sykes Cottages suggested the results indicate a need for British travellers to explore their own landscapes in greater detail. “With 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 15 National Parks and 1,000 smaller islands to its name, Great Britain has so much to be discovered and enjoyed,” he said.

Although respondents were able to correctly identify Northumberland’s Lindisfarne Castle, Cornwall’s Minack Theatre and Lake Windermere in the Lake District as UK-based, there are plenty of other stunning locations to be explored on home soil.

So-called ‘staycations’ have become increasingly popular over recent years, and this makes now an ideal time for Brits to explore their homeland. Even if you’re booking a holiday in the UK, it is important that you obtain travel insurance to protect yourself against any unforeseen circumstances.
