Want to get a glimpse of NYC circa 2008? Now you can thanks to Google Street View

Sound confusing? Well it’s actually rather simple as Google has announced a feature on its Street View that allows users to scroll back to as early as 2007to get a now and then comparison of the destinations they have come to know and love. Explaining the feature in more detail in a blog post, Vinay Shet, product manager for Google Street View, said:

"If you've ever dreamt of being a time traveler like Doc Brown, now's your chance. "Starting today, You can travel to the past to see how a place has changed over the years by exploring Street View imagery in Google Maps for desktop. We've gathered historical imagery from past Street View collections dating back to 2007 to create this digital time capsule of the world."

If you are heading to the Big Apple anytime soon, or are even planning a virtual trip from your living room, you can track the growth of the Freedom Tower in New York City from start to finish. Intrepid travellers cum football fanatics can also turn back time to view the entire construction of the 2014 World Cup Stadium in Fortaleza, Brazil.

"Forget going 88 mph in a DeLorean 0 you can stay where you are and use Google Maps to virtually explore the world as it is - and as it was. Happy (time) traveling!" Shet added. Shet also explained another aspect of the new feature that can help users reflect on recent history: "This new feature can also serve as a digital timeline of recent history, like the reconstruction after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Onagawa, Japan. You can even experience different seasons and see what it would be like to cruise Italian roadways in both summer and winter." How will you use Google’s new Street View feature to enhance your travel experience?
