Mamma Mia! Brits name Italian as their favourite foreign cuisine

A new survey by online travel agent On the Beach has revealed that Italian food is most likely to tickle the taste buds of Brits on holiday, with a hearty Italian claiming the top spot in the nation's top 10 favourite foreign foods. Italian food took 20% of the vote in the survey of 1,500 British holidaymakers with Thai (9.5%) and Spanish (9%) completing the top 3.

The top ten was completed by Mexican, Greek, French, Caribbean, Moroccan, Portuguese and Turkish. The research also helps to shatter the idea of Brits on holiday opting for the food they know. Just 14% of those questioned said they would stick with British style restaurants and bars, while nearly three-quarters (74%) said they would choose Paella over Pie and Mash on a Spanish holiday.

To add further weight to the idea that UK travellers are breaking out of the foodie box, further figures showed that 84% of Brits would be happy to stock up on local brands and foods at local supermarkets. This is more than five times higher than the percentage that would fill their baskets with well-known British brands and food.

Commenting on the survey findings, Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach said: "It would appear that the old Brit abroad tag no longer exists with the majority preferring to try local foods instead of the old British favourites. One of the best things about being in a different country is sampling the local food so it's good to hear that as a nation, we are now more likely to head to local restaurants serving local food, rather than heading straight for the Dog and Duck."

Wherever you are heading to on holiday in 2014, it is important organise travel insurance cover in advance.
