Getting the Wizz Air experience? Expect a delay

Passengers flying from London Luton airport to the Hungarian capital with low-cost airline Wizz Air have had enough of waiting.

It has been claimed that flight W62206 from Luton to Budapest has not left on time once in almost 10 months. The Wizz Air flight has been delayed from as little as two minutes to over 12 hours, but never left on time.

According to flight data specialists EUclaim, that tots up to 176 hours of waiting time and 293 late departures since 1st June 2013. EUclaim has an online calculator where passengers can work out whether they are entitled to claim compensation. You should also check whether your travel insurance policy will offer compensation for a significant delay.

Wizz Air denies that it has never been on time, saying that many of its departure times are not defined as ‘delayed’. The airline cited CAA industry standards which “define all flights departing within 15 mins of the scheduled departure time, as on time.” With the 15 minute window taken into consideration, almost three-quarters (73%) of Flight W62206 departures were ‘on time’. A spokesperson for the airline also said that of these flights, 78.6% arrived on time in Budapest.

Just 15 passengers travelling on Flight W62206 have claimed compensation, but more are entitled to. Regulation 261 applies to EU flights that are delayed by more than three hours. This time frame refers to the arrival time, not departure. If a flight leaves late, but arrives within the three-hour window, it’s not eligible for compensation.

Passengers on eligible flights could claim between £210 and £500 depending on the length of the delay and the distance of the flight. Wizz Air operates 28 routes from London Luton has says that it has a punctuality rate of 88% - higher than the average 87% of all airlines at the airport.
