Wet weather sends Brits on overseas holidays

‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’ will be ringing around the country this summer as more Brits intend to holiday overseas than on a UK ‘staycation’ this year.

According to new research, as the UK suffered one of the wettest January’s on record, more people want to escape Britain for warmer and sunnier destinations. Just a couple of years ago the staycation was all the rage with British holidaymakers. In 2012, more than half of people (56%) intended on exploring their own land rather than venturing abroad.

The staycation trend may have been kicked off by Prime Minster David Cameron as he took to Cornwall for a family holiday in 2010. However, in the BDRC Holiday Trends 2014 report just 45% said they planned on spending at least one week on holiday in the UK – the lowest level since 2010.

The researchers also found that over three-quarters (78%) of Brits are heading abroad this year, up from 66% in 2012. High earners are even more likely to jet off on a foreign holiday, with 82% planning an overseas trip, compared to 74% last year. The Holiday Trends 2014 report found that more people thought it was unlikely they would lose their job this year. This financial confidence is an indication that the country is starting to emerge from the austerity era.

However, as the research was carried out in January, the miserable weather is also likely to blame for the high number of Brits escaping the UK for the summer. It seems the staycation is no longer in vogue as bookings at popular holiday hotspots, such as the South-West and Scotland, are down for 2014. The only region to see an improvement is the capital. Bookings in London are up for a second year running.

Families need to remember that travel insurance is a holiday essential whether they are planning to holiday abroad or in the UK. Jon Young, associate director at BDRC Continental, said: “Hopefully, with an improvement in the weather, the rest of the UK will join London and increase in its appeal as a holiday destination.”
