Welsh beach ‘one of the best in the world’, says TripAdvisor

Rhossili Bay in the Gower, Wales has been named in the top 10 best beaches in the world.

Its spectacular scenery has made this beach a popular spot for locals and tourists, but also as a television location – popping up in both Doctor Who and the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. The Bay, which can be found at the very tip of the Gower Peninsula was ranked ninth in TripAdvisor’s Traveller Choice Beaches Awards – up one place from 2013.

As a result, it topped the UK’s best beach list and came third across Europe for the second year in a row. This beautiful Welsh beach managed to triumph against beaches in top European destinations, including Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey. And its popularity now means that it is mentioned in the same sentence as glamorous destinations like the Seychelles and Mexico.

“These awards recognise the best beaches in the UK and worldwide, according to the travellers that have visited and given them the highest levels of praise,” said James Kay, speaking on behalf of TripAdvisor. “To have three British beaches named among the best in Europe just goes to show how lucky we are in the UK to have such stunning scenery right on our doorstep.”

Rhossili Bay may have been the UK’s top beach, but Woolacombe Beach in Devon and Porthminster Beach in Cornwall landed silver and bronze position – meaning they too featured in the European top 10. “This is fantastic news!” said Cllr Nick Bradley, Cabinet member for Regeneration in the Gower. “Our natural resources and in particular our coastline are what make Swansea Bay one of the most attractive destinations in the UK for holidays and short-breaks.”

According to the TripAdvisor awards, Baia do Sancho is the best beach in the world. It is located on an island in Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago around 200 miles off the Brazilian mainland. Anyone planning to visit on of these spectacular beaches – from Rhossili Bay in Wales to Baia do Sancho in Brazil – will require suitable travel insurance.
