Lack of advance planning to blame for 15% of couples rowing on holiday

The annual summer holiday is something of a British tradition, with couples, families and groups of friends jetting off for a week or two of relaxation in the sun. Only it doesn’t always work out that way.

According to new research, couples have admitted to arguing within hours – or even minutes – of their trip. When GetYourGuide.co.uk questioned couples about rowing on holiday, 15% admitted that a lack of advance planning was the main reasons behind their disagreements.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for couples to start bickering, with around one in 10 confessing to arguments starting within an hour of leaving the house. However, the rowing doesn’t end there, with loved ones carrying their grudges onto their holiday. Once at their destination the research found couples would argue about getting lost, deciding what to do, entertaining the children and money.

“This research suggests an alarming lack of advance planning on the traveller’s part,” said Johannes Reck, spokesman for GetYourGuide.co.uk. “It appears that getting lost and deciding what to do is also something that contributes to couples arguing more frequently – again something that could potentially negatively affect a trip away.” Of the 2,000 Brits questioned, 15% admitted that the destination wouldn’t live up to expectations or the money spent. Money was one of the biggest causes of stress on holiday with one in 10 worried about finding things to do within their budget.

Mr Reck advised doing research and planning before jetting off: “A solution to this is to spend some structured time planning your days’ activities before you leave. Not only will you save time but a great deal of money too.” Planning in advance is essential for anyone wanting to maximise enjoyment and value for money on holiday.

It also gives plenty of time to ensure everything is in place, such as checking that child passports are still in date, everyone has adequate travel insurance and currency has been exchanged. Leaving these things until last minute or worse, when you’re already abroad, could prove to be costly.
