St Patrick’s Day sees Brits flock to Ireland

Ireland is about to be inundated with Brits wanting to celebrate their patron saint’s day, as Expedia.co.uk reports that bookings are up by 121% on the previous year.

St. Patrick’s Day is renowned for being a day of celebration around the world, but the craic is taken to a whole new level on the Emerald Isle. Andy Washington, Managing Director for Expedia.co.uk said, “It’s great to see that bookings to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day are on the rise with more and more people taking the time to travel to the heart of the action to enjoy the festivities.”

However, by marking the festivities travellers could be set to face higher prices. In 2013 Dublin hotel prices soared by as 173% over the holiday - an increase that spurred an online backlash from consumers. While Dublin’s hoteliers do seem to have taken this into consideration, hotel prices are still much higher than at other times of the year. For example, a one night stay in the capital on 15th March costs an average of £175 – 88% more than the monthly average of £93 per night.

The change in tactics seems to have worked as according to Expedia, Brits are the biggest fans of St Patrick’s Day, topping the table for number of hotel bookings. “Ireland is a very popular destination for Brits throughout the year and events like St. Patrick’s day are a particularly powerful driver of tourism with bookings increasing by almost 50% for the week of the festivities compared to average weekly bookings for March,” said Washington.

Mr Washington advised travellers to stay close to the city centre to make the most of the “legendary Irish pubs” and world-famous parade. The St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place on Monday, 17th March and will feature traditional Irish dancing, street performers, markets, a funfair and live music.

Ireland’s capital, Dublin, is the first choice for Brits this year, but Galway and Cork are also popular choices. If are planning to join in St Patrick’s Day festivities in Ireland it is important to secure travel insurance in advance.
