Brits flock to Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has reported a huge increase in the number of British tourists visiting the country each year. Around 5,000 British nationals are now flocking to the South-East Asian nation - a 35% increase.

Renowned for its spectacular volcanic scenery and jungle tribes, PNG is becoming more popular, thanks to better flight availability, new tours and itineraries, as well as the new tourism office in London.

Unfortunately, there are still no direct flights from PNG to the UK, but there are now more domestic and international flights. British holidaymakers will have to catch a connecting flight from Singapore or Hong Kong. Speaking on behalf of Papua New Guinea Tourism, Cecily Barton said: “Papua New Guinea is unknown, but that is part of the excitement. Tour operators are coming on board and those already running trips are increasing their offerings.”

The Telegraph has already named PNG as an up and coming holiday destination by listing it as one of the top 20 places to visit in 2014. Many segments of tourism are on the rise, but the cruise sector is growing rapidly, with more interesting expeditions now available around PNG.P&O Cruises has announced that it will now have eight voyages to PNG in early April, while Coral Princess Cruises are planning to introduce a fifth departure for 2014.

PNG is already famed for its world-class diving facilities, but more companies are now offering holidays to the region. Being so remote and without the same mainstream tourism, PNG is attractive to “more adventurous travellers in an age when the world is becoming smaller and smaller”, according to Neill Ghosh of Original Diving.

He went on to say that he has noticed a marked increase in the number of Brits wanting to holiday in PNG since he began offering holidays three years ago. However, it is still out of reach for many because of the high cost of travel. The Foreign Office has warned that while most tourists aren’t affected, the nation does have a high crime rate. This makes it even more important that visitors are investing in travel insurance before jetting off to this mysterious country.
