Tourists invited to ‘Like’ Lithuania with the world’s largest ‘Like’ sculpture

Famed for its historical heritage, Lithuania is embarking on a new campaign called Like’able Lithuania to attract more tourists and show off what the country has to offer.

As the centrepiece of the Like’able Lithuania campaign, the world’s largest ‘Like’ sculpture is to be created. The sculpture, which will be built in Druskininkai Town this summer, gives social media users a chance to be a co-owner – and get a certificate to prove it. Recognising its importance, the country has embraced social media and the lifestyle of the internet generation. All wannabe co-owners have to do is ‘Like’ Lithuania. They will then receive a certificate and be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win a trip to Lithuania.

The unique campaign hopes to attract younger people to its towns and cities by showing what Lithuania can offer tourists. More than 150,000 people are already involved, but it hopes to reach one million by the end of the campaign. Like’able Lithuania gives people the opportunity to find out about the country’s culture, activities and attractions across Facebook, Google+ Vkontakte, Twitter and YouTube.

Head of the State Department of Tourism, Dr Raimonda Balnienė, said: “Everyone will find things to LIKE here – the Like’able Lithuania project makes sure of it every day. We are happy that, from now on, we will be able to boast of the world’s largest sculpture dedicated to social networks.”

Druskininkai Town was chosen as the location for the sculpture by social network users. It is one of the most famous Lithuanian resorts and is visited by more than 69,000 international tourists each year. Lithuania might not be one of the first countries travellers think of visiting, but British tourism is on the rise there. According to a report in The Baltic Course, Lithuania welcomed 8,700 UK tourists in Q4 2013, up by 11.5% on the same quarter last year.
