Brits consider good food ‘essential’ for perfect holiday

A new survey into British travel habits has found that holidaymakers are willing to brush aside nice beaches, glorious weather and luxury hotel in favour of good food.

Travel search site momondo found that dining out was cited most often as a preferred experience for Brits holidaying abroad. When asked which of 12 popular holiday activities they most like to do, ‘eating out at restaurants’ was the top answers.

In fact, almost two thirds (63%) said that good food is an essential part of the perfect holiday. Eating out is also something that holidaymakers enjoy doing alone or with family and friends: 65% said that going to a restaurant with their spouse or family is a preferred activity, but even 19% of solo travellers listed sampling the local cuisine as something they like to do.

Brits’ foodie habits don’t stop there. The results of the survey also suggest that people are more likely to try new food when abroad. More than a quarter (26%) are keen to try unusual dishes, while 45% like to mix local specialities with tried and tested favourites. Of all the travellers’ questioned, just 15% are happy to stick to familiar food and 4% prefer to cook their own.

This appetite for the unfamiliar is exciting but may also be trying on our digestive system, so it’s important that people are covered by adequate travel insurance. Despite being happy to delve into the unknown when on holiday – 85% agreed that they prefer seeing new things when they travel – Brits aren’t quite as adventurous back home.

When given six options and asked what they like most about the UK, just 8% answered food. So, 92% prefer the people, weather, culture, sights or nature. While Brits might not be keen on their own food back home, it is very important when travelling abroad. Around a third of holidaymakers will only choose a hotel if it has a restaurant.

People are also likely to splash out on gastronomic delights while travelling, with just a fifth (21%) preferring to spend less money on food if they needed to cut back. Julie Pedersen of momondo said: “The Brits are culinary curious people - both when it comes to travel destinations, and experiences whilst away. This study reflects how food is the focal point for many of us when we travel.”
