Travellers to benefit from cheap hotel prices in Europe

Anyone intending to holiday in Europe this summer will be pleased to hear that the cost of hotels is falling.

According to hotel comparison site Trivago, hotel prices in Europe are down by 7% year-on-year. This month the average price per night is £82 – compared to £88 this time last year. Some European cities and countries are even cheaper as prices have fallen by more than 10% in certain places. Destinations tipped to be hot for 2014, including France, Italy, Turkey and Cyprus, have seen their average price per night fall to its lowest in three years.

Other countries across Europe are also seeing prices fall. Trivago has found prices to be down by 15% year-on-year in Norway and Bulgaria, making the average price per night £123 and £46 respectively. In June 2012 the average price for a hotel for night was £106, but this month it will cost just £46 – 57% less.

Popular holiday destinations for Brits are also looking a lot cheaper than they have done for a number of years. The average hotel in Cyprus would set people back £128 a night in August 2011, but in February 2014 that price has fallen to just £61. Travellers planning city breaks to Rome, Vienna and Istanbul will also see cheaper hotel prices. Spending one night in February 2014 will cost:

• £79 in Rome – compared to £158 in May 2011 • £83 in Vienna – compared to £125 in May 2011 • £71 in Istanbul – compared to £159 in May 2013. Speaking on behalf of Trivago, Denise Bartlett said: “Although it is normal to see huge price differences between summer and winter, particularly during January and February, it is unusual to see a year-on-year drop in hotel prices of more than a few per cent.

This news will be welcomed by all holidaymakers, but particularly parents that have been fighting against huge price hikes during school holidays. As news of cheap hotels spreads, there could be a surge in late bookings. When booking last minute it’s important that consumers remember to buy travel insurance and check their passport expiry date.
