Fastest growing tourist destinations revealed

2013 was a busy year for travelling: international tourist arrivals grew by 5% to hit over one billion and 52 million more people travelled around the world. As a result, many countries have revealed a boost in tourism. If you’re travelling to any of these top 10 destinations, worldwide travel insurance is an absolute must.

10. Taiwan- Up by 9.7% on 2012, Taiwan is one of many Asian destinations to report an increased number of visitors. Top attractions include the National Palace Museum and Yangmingshan National Park.

9. UAE - Considering Dubai’s popularity, it’s no real surprise to see that the UAE has seen 10% growth in tourist numbers. World-class shopping and motor racing make it a top destination for the rich and famous.

8. Russia - With record numbers of visitors in 2013, Russia is just about ready for the Winter Olympics 2014. Despite recent controversies, it pulled in 10.5% more tourists last year.

7. Turkey - Often overlooked by Brits who favour the Spanish coastline, Turkey is becoming a hot holiday destination. It offers everything from spectacular beaches to the hustle and bustle of Istanbul.

6. Vietnam - Another success story from Asia, Vietnam reported that its visitor numbers were up by 10.6%. Visitors can explore Ha Long Bay, the Mekong Delta and Hoi An.

5. Philippines - Situated just off the coast of Vietnam, the Philippines also proved to be popular with an 11.6% increase in 2013 and is also set to be one of the hottest destinations for 2014.

4. Greece - It may be in economic crisis, but Greece saw a 15% spike in the number of tourists visiting. Whether it’s one of the Greek islands or the mainland, tourists can’t resist the Grecian charm.

3. Thailand - Back to Asia again and Thailand pulled in almost 20% more visitors in 2012. Popular places to visit are Bangkok, Phuket and Yao Noi.

2. Kazakhstan - The most surprising destination on the list is Kazakhstan. Thanks to the city of Astana, the Charyn Canyon and ancient Taraz, 21.9% more people visited last year.

1. Japan - Since the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, Japan has spent the past two years successfully pushing its tourism promotion. Last year 10 million visitors went to Japan, causing a 24% increase on 2013.
