A third of Brits to tick off bucket list destinations in 2014

New research suggests that rather than visiting the same resorts year after year, 2014 is going to be the year that Brits experience new destinations.

In fact, over a third (35%) hopes to tick off some of their bucket list destinations this year. One in ten of them are pretty confident that they’ll be able to cross them all off before ringing in 2015. However, Brits’ bucket lists reveal that many want to travel closer to home, with almost a third (32%) wanting to explore Europe.

There were a few keen to travel further afield, with 12% listing Australia and New Zealand, 10% the Caribbean and North America, but just 3% to South America. Those that do want to explore the rest of the world need to ensure that they invest in worldwide travel insurance. It’s not just people with a bucket list that are planning to explore the world this year, two thirds (65%) of people planning a holiday for 2014, admitted that they want to experience something new.

The study has also found that Britons are hoping to learn a bit about their holiday destination this year, with three in 10 wanting to visit a famous site. A quarter also said they hope to see wildlife, while 18% want to experience a new culture. It seems there is an air of competition amongst travelling Brits, as almost a quarter (24%) decides where to go based on doing something different. Yet, just 3% follow the recommendations of their friends and family.

The research also found that the older generation are more adventurous. Nearly a quarter (23%) of the over 55s said that they wanted to do something different in 2014, but just 16% of those under 24 said the same. The figures from the research commissioned by Celebrity Cruises have been revealed just ahead of Ben Fogle’s new Great Adventures series, which airs this Friday (January 24th).

When discussing the findings of the survey, Ben said, “It is really encouraging to see Brits realising that holidays can be more than a break away and an opportunity to try something different. Many are keen to realise their ambitions to take the road less travelled and immerse themselves in new cultures and experiences.”
