Brits planning to spend, spend, spend on 2014 holiday

Brits are planning to go all out when it comes to their 2014 holidays, with the latest research revealing that almost two-thirds of Brits (60%) plan to increase their travel budget this year.

The findings from the Diffusion’s 2014 Consumer Travel Trends report showed that when compared to 2013 UK travellers will be upping their travel budget by 14%. 8% of the 1,000 holidaymakers questioned are feeling so flush in 2014 that they are planning to double the amount they spent on their 2013.

Continuing the positive figures the report showed that 17% are planning to increase their number of holidays in 2014. 12.5% will also be heading further afield to get their holiday fix while 10% will be booking a multicentre trip. 19% of Brits are also planning on indulging in a ‘fly and flop’ holidays, with plans to fully unwind at beach destinations around the globe.

The report also revealed where holidaymakers would be drawing inspiration for their trips abroad in 2014. Topping the list were word-of-mouth recommendations (46%), followed by TV programmes (30%) and review sites (e.g. TripAdvisor – 29%). The list was completed by online media (22%), newspapers (16%), friends’ Facebook and Twitter photos (15%), lifestyle magazines (13%), advertising campaigns (11%) and blogger reviews (8%).

Commenting on the report findings, Tom Malcolm, Head of Consumer at Diffusion, said: “Understanding consumer behaviour and changing sources of inspiration is vital to any travel brand striving to stay ahead in 2014. Brits may be set to increase the amount they spend on holidays in the coming year but before splashing out they’ll consult a variety of sources to influence their decision.
