Strong pound spells sunnier holidays for Brits abroad

Holidaying Brits are set to enjoy a bargain break overseas thanks to the continued strength of the pound, new research has revealed.

Figures from the eighth Post Office Travel Money Holiday Money Report showed that UK travellers will be getting more bang for their buck on holiday this year, thanks to a combination of the rising value of sterling and holiday costs falling in a number of popular destinations around the globe. 70 per cent of resorts and cities surveyed worldwide have seen prices fall by as much as 32%, meaning that Brits can enjoy doing even more of the things they enjoy on their annual stints in the sun.

Bali emerged as the cheapest of all 44 destinations surveyed, and closer to home Portugal’s Algarve trumped the Costa del Sol to become the cheapest destination in Europe. Here prices have fallen by 18%. Other European resorts where holidaymakers can make savings, include resorts in Cyprus (Paphos), Greece (Corfu) and Italy (Sorrento).

Commenting on the figures, Paul Havenhand, Head of Travel at the Post Office, said: “The fall in the value of the lira should make Marmaris and other Turkish resorts very attractive to bargain hunters. Not only have prices fallen this year but they are now 29 per cent cheaper than two years ago.” In terms of long-haul destinations Vietnam (Hoi An) was named as one of 10 Post Office Holiday Hotspots for third consecutive year. Here the total cost of 8 items including a 3-course meal for two with wine, a cup of coffee and sun cream came in at just £44.06.

Havenhand added that low costs at destinations around the world mean that holidaymakers will be able to choose from a whole host of destinations in 2014. “Holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice this year with better value-for -money in most destinations worldwide. To cash in on this, UK tourists should do their homework before booking to find out where the pound is worth most and where resort costs are low. They can check out resort prices at www.postoffice.co.uk/worldwidecosts and then change sufficient travel cash to cover the cost of those tourist items, especially meals,” he added.

If you are heading abroad in 2014, one way you can save on costs is to secure the best price on your travel insurance for your needs.
