Five things we can expect from travel in the next 12 months.

Each year brings with it a new set of holiday trends and 2014 is no exception. Research conducted by Expedia.co.uk has highlighted some of the key travel trends we can expect to see over the next 12 months in its Future of Travel Report. Here five things we can expect during the upcoming year.

  • Smartphones will act as personal travel reps

Previous research has shown that our range of gadgetry is constantly by our side as we struggle to completely switch off on holiday. It may come as no surprise then, that as well as being used for holiday planning, smarthphones will be used by one in seven to edit a trip – presumably this means adjusting the course of their trip once they have arrived at their destination. One in four will also use their smartphone to share details of their trip with others.

  • Global sporting events will drive tourism

Key sporting fixtures in the 2014 sporting calendar including the World Cup in Brazil and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are likely to drive tourism. To support this idea figures from Expedia.co.uk revealed a staggering 1095% increase in searches for Brazil in the wake of England’s qualification while searches for Glasgow shot up by an impressive 219%.

  • Holidays to Greece will continue to grow

As the Greek economy still struggles to get back on its feet, travellers are able to snap up some great bargains in Greece’s local shops and boutiques. The cost of eating out also presents good value for holidaymakers. Searches on Expedia.co.uk for the Greek islands for 2014 have risen more than two-fold in a year-on-year comparison, and Andy Washington, Managing Director of Expedia.co.uk explains just what’s behind the destination’s enduring popularity. “The Greek festivities around Greek Orthodox Easter and Assumption Day in August are quite spectacular and well worth seeing. Combining a visit to the mainland and a trip to the islands gives you a great opportunity to take advantage of the shopping and dining bargains and then relax on the islands. With delicious food, almost guaranteed sunshine and the chance to get away from it all or party until dawn, it’s no wonder that Greece’s popularity continues to grow.”

  • Travellers will seek out “authenticity” from their travel experiences
  • Holidaymakers will be keen to “go native” in 2014 as they seek to get to an authentic picture of the destinations they are visiting. Expedia.co.uk has already seen bookings for apartment accommodation and B&Bs offering a more personalised experience jump by 30%. Commenting on the report, Carroll Rheem of Brand USA commented, said: “With the more mature markets I think there is a general move maybe towards authenticity… moving away from tourist traps and experiencing New York City outside of Time Square, for example.”

    • Leisure and business travel will be combined on breaks abroad

    Research from the report shows that the number of Brits adding a leisure break to their business trip has increased by 35% over the last year. Under 35s, dubbed the Millennial generation, are more likely to do so than those over 35. These respective proportions are more than half, against one in five.If you are heading abroad for business, it is important to organise business travel insurance in advance.
