Taking a holiday is relaxing, but the lead up is far from it, says survey

It’s the start of the New Year and many Brits will be planning ahead for their summer holidays hoping to bag an array of savings. But while the idea of going on a beach holiday or a city break may spell instant relaxation for many, there may still be an element of stress involved in their overseas break.

According to a survey conducted by Teletext a staggering 43% of holidaymakers questioned were anxious rather than excited about the prospect of heading away from UK shores. Among the concerns expressed by UK travellers were fears relating to the suitability of their hotel, weather conditions in their destinations of choice, potential delays and much more.

And when it comes to choosing where to go and what to do on our ideal getaway the survey reveals that it takes us a full two weeks to commit to a holiday choice – that’s 11 days longer than the average length of a holiday which stands at 9 days.

The factors that keep holidaymakers from making an instant decision include worries over how to keep children occupied on their holiday and partners having diverging ideas about what they really want from their holiday experience. Holidaymakers also invest two days of their time finding out what to do in the area, and what their hotel has to offer. Eleven hours is also spent booking transfers from the airport or organising transport in general – which may include car hire.

Even once the holiday is in full swing holidaymakers can still struggle to unwind with 22% fretting about work, 27% worrying about holiday weather, and a further 27% concerned about lost luggage or flight delays during the course of their trip. If you are heading off on holiday in 2014 with the family in tow and plan to hire a car, putting car hire excess insurance in place should help to ease your concerns about cover.
