Where will we have drawn our 2014 holiday inspiration from? Christmas TV apparently

Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a line up of festive season one offs on the box and the return of film classics. And it seems as well as keeping us occupied over our Christmas holidays once the turkey has been gobbled and the presents ripped open, festive season TV has also provided fodder for our 2014 holidays.

According to ABTA Brits are keen to set sail for destinations featured in their favourite Christmas TV programmes, replacing their travel guides for a TV guide when it comes to inspiration for their breaks abroad in the New Year. Fans of The Sound of Music will be booking up holidays to the stunning Austrian city of Salzburg as well as the surrounding Austrian Alps, while mafia classic The Godfather will see travellers soaking up the sights and sounds of Sicily.

Michael Palin’s Wyeth’s World is also set to inspire travellers to visit the picturesque American states of Pennsylvania and Maine. Commenting on the trend, Victoria Bacon, ABTA Head of Communications said: “It’s not just travel shows that inspire people’s holiday choices, any TV programme or film that showcases a destination strongly can be incredibly influential. Christmas represents a time when friends and family come together to share ideas and inspiration, often ahead of booking their holiday in January, so that makes television and film particularly influential during this time.”

ABTA also made some key predications for holiday trends this year as part of its 2014 travel report, including the fact that Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey and France will continue to be popular with UK travellers this year. Travellers are also set to be opting for ‘simple and authentic’ holidays rather than five-star luxury while the top five destinations to watch in 2014 are Brazil, The Caribbean (Antigua), Costa Rica, Greece and Malaysia.

Mark Tanzer ABTA Chief Executive said: “We know that Brits hate to cut back on their holidays and after several years of tough market conditions, we are seeing early signs of more optimism amongst British consumers. However, with the squeeze on household budgets continuing, we are expecting that tried and tested destinations and package holidays will continue to perform well in the coming year. We are also expecting a range of other overseas destinations to prove popular in 2014, as well as another good year for domestic tourism after the heatwave in the UK in summer 2013.”
