Want to head somewhere new in 2014? Try one of these ‘Destinations on the Rise’

The New Year is the perfect opportunity to try out a new destination, but with a whole world of opportunities on offer it can be difficult to plump on just one country.

The good news is sites such as TripAdvisor have done all the hard work for you, and when it comes to cream of the globe’s upcoming destinations, it seems that Havana, Cuba definitely has it. Havana recently took top spot in the site’s 2013 Travellers’ Choice Awards ranking of the top 10 Destinations on the Rise in the World, and with the Caribbean island offering a diverse history, Cuban rumba and the world-famous Cuban cigars it’s not hard to see why the destination has proved popular with travellers time and time again.

Recent figures from the National Statistics Office in Havana appear to support this idea, with the total number of tourists visiting the country climbing by 3.8% between August 2012 and August 2013. This figure also included 13,172 UK holidaymakers. The top five places in the ranking were completed by La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica; Kathmandu, Nepal; Jerusalem, Israel and Cusco, Peru.

Commenting on the Awards, James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: “A really diverse mix of destinations have caught the eye this past year – from the amazing history and culture of cities like Havana and Kathmandu, through to the sunny beaches of Fortaleza in Brazil - it is clear that travellers’ horizons are expanding all the time.”

In Europe Corralejo, Spain, took pole position in the listing of top 10 Destinations on the Rise in Europe. The top five was completed by Porto, Portugal; Krakow, Poland; Goreme, Turkey and Helsinki, Finland. Jay added: “In Europe, destinations as far north as Helsinki and as far south as Corralejo in the Canary Islands, have been able to bolster their reputation among travellers and attract new visitors.”

If you are heading overseas in the New Year, it is important to organise single-trip travel insurance in advance.
