Growing interest in the 2014 World Cup sees hotel searches soar

Following the draw of 2014 World Cup group stage matches last Friday (December 6th) there has been a significant leap in hotel searches for stays in Brazil’s largest city.

According to OTA searches for hotels in Sao Paulo were 30 times higher on Saturday and Sunday in a weekend-on-weekend comparison. This surge in interest may come as no surprise to UK footie fans as England is set to face Uruguay in the city on June 19th. A similar rise in hotel searches was also seen in districts that are set to play host to World Cup Games. For Belo Horizonte – the city where England is set to play against Costa Rica on June 24th – hotel searches had risen 25-fold.

Searches for Rio de Janeiro were also four times higher than the previous weekend, while searches for hotels in Manaus, where England plays Italy on June 14th, also experienced growth. Overall searches for hotels in Brazil have grown by 18% in 2013, compared to figures for 2012.

Commenting on the figures, a spokeswoman said: “With the surge of searches for hotels this weekend, it’s clear that interest is growing rapidly ahead of next year’s World Cup. “As the event gets closer we’re expecting to see demand rise, particularly in January as Fifa reveals the next lucky ticket holders and more hotel rooms are made available. “Sporting events have real global appeal and fans may face fierce competition to get a hotel room, with demand expected to outstrip supply during the World Cup.”

She then went on to outline that football fans who are planning to attend the world cup should book their tickets at earliest opportunity. “Our advice to fans is to book rooms early. Supporters who keep their ‘eye on the ball’ and book rooms as soon as more are made available next month are likely to score the best value for money,” she said.

If you are heading to the World Cup or any other major event in 2014 it is important to take out worldwide travel insurance in advance.
