Will the 24-hour tube spell more holidays from Heathrow?

The Mayor of London recently announced that London Underground is set for a radical overhaul; with one of the key changes that is set to come into effect from 2015 including the introduction of the 24-hour tube.

The new Friday and Saturday all-night tube service will operate on the Victoria, Central, Piccadilly and Jubilee lines - including “key sections” of the Northern line, and as well as offering an extended service for late-night revelers, figures in the travel industry have argued that the 24-hour tube could see more holidaymakers flying from Heathrow.

Loveholidays.com argues that as Heathrow is the only London/South East airport serviced by the underground, the changes could see those looking for a weekend getaway choosing Heathrow as their preferred airport. Al Francis from loveholidays.com, said: "People will be more willing to take flights at 'unsociable' times because the 24-hour Tube service will mean it will be easier to get across London to and from the airport.”

However, while fans of a city break may be heading to Heathrow, via the tube, in their droves, travellers’ uptake of ‘holiday extras’ could suffer. "The losers will be 'holiday extras'. With a 24-hour Tube service, people are less likely to need airport parking or book an airport hotel," added Francis.

Despite this prediction, James Lewis, head of partnerships at Holiday Extras, argued that the 24-hour tube won’t see a dramatic change in consumers’ demand for holiday extras. He said: "The introduction of 24 hour tubes in 2015 is great news for London and all those using Heathrow. However, the airports are already served by good transport links, so we don't think that Holiday Extras will see a reduction in parking or hotel bookings at Heathrow as a result.

"Our customers want to take the hassle out of getting to the airport and to get the holiday off to a good start with a overnight stay at an airport hotel." If you are heading away for a city break in the coming months, booking travel insurance in advance is essential.
