Skis at the ready! Winter resorts open early to eager audience

Here in the UK forecasters’ warning of heavy snow and icy winds is met with a less than enthusiastic reception as Brits’ envision themselves facing the worst of the winter drudgery in the days and weeks to come.

However, there is one community where predictions of inches of snow are welcomed with open arms, and that’s the globe’s army of winter sports enthusiasts. And the reason for their glee? Well, in short, good snow equals an even greater time on the slopes, and there are few fans of skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports that wouldn’t welcome this idea.

This year the snow has been so super that ski resorts across Europe have opened up their doors ahead of the ski season start on November 30th. These include the following: Zermatt and Davos in Switzerland, Obergurgl and Kaprun in Austria and Tignes, Val Thorens and Alpe D'Huez in France.

Across the other side of the pond things are also looking good, with Whistler and Big White in Canada and Winter Park and Aspen in the US all welcoming visitors two weeks earlier the planned. And what has the response from winter sports enthusiasts been? According to specialist operator and travel agent Ski Solutions the early opening of key ski resorts around the globe has led to a surge in enquiries, with this figure rising by 17% over the past week.

Ski Solutions managing director Craig Burton said: “This year has got off to a flying start, with the best November snowfall in six years. Skiers haven’t had it so good for a long time and it’s got all the signs of being a great winter. “Consistent storms throughout November and cold temperatures have laid down a fantastic snow base across much of the Alps.

“North America too has seen an excellent start to the season, in particular the Canadian resorts of Whistler and Banff, which have all been open for over a week already, and many of the Colorado resorts such as Breckenridge.” The premium weather conditions for winter sports are also set to continue into December, with mid-range forecasts indicating that cold temperatures will be maintained across the Alps. Are you planning to head to a ski resort this winter? If so remember to take out winter sports travel insurance in advance to ensure that both you and your equipment are covered.
