BA reveals what makes us 'app'y on holiday as EU agency prepares to approve in-flight

We are a nation that loves our gadgetry, and even when we’ve earmarked our upcoming holiday as a chance to ‘get away from it all’ we rarely succeed in our mission to completely switch off once we are away.

Now research by British Airways (BA) has shown, unsurprisingly, that the smartphone was tipped as the number one piece of technology that almost a third (32%) of holidaymakers couldn’t do without when on their travels, trumping other devices such as music players, tablets and e-books.

And what is it that makes our smartphones so un-put-downable? Well it’s access to a whole world of apps that can make the process of planning and executing our holidays that much smoother. Topping the list of holidaymakers’ most-loved apps were weather apps (32%). This was followed by camera apps in second place (29%).

The list of popular apps used on holiday was completed by the following: map apps (23%), social media apps for sharing updates (21%), news apps (16%), social media apps to find what’s going on (14%), translator apps (12%) and local travel guide apps (11%).

Commenting on the survey findings, which questioned 2,000 people, Nick Jones, British Airways’ social media expert, said: “It’s no surprise that the smartphone is the one item many people can’t travel without. We know that our customers like to stay in touch with us while they’re travelling. We use Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to keep in touch with our 4.5 million cumulative followers whether they are at home or abroad.”

The good news for gadget fans is that the European Aviation Safety Agency (Easa) has recently given the green light to the use of mobile devices during landing and take-off, with the changes set to come into effect by the end of this month. However, the changes do not apply to voice calls or texts. In a press release Patrick Ky, Easa executive director, said: “This is a major step in the process of expanding the freedom to use personal electronic devices on-board aircraft without compromise in safety.” If you are planning a holiday in 2013 and beyond, it is important to secure travel insurance in advance.
