Heston does Heathrow: Award-winning chef set to open eatery in terminal 2

He is known for his experimental food creations and love of a challenge and now award-winning chef Heston Blumenthal is set to take his crowd-pleasing culinary creations to the unlikely venue of Heathrow’s terminal 2.

Speaking to Reuters Blumenthal, who is best known for his restaurant The Fat Duck and creating sell out Christmas dessert creations for Waitrose, confirmed that passengers who have passed through security at the terminal will be able to enjoy a range of gastronomic delights as they await flights to destinations including Aberdeen, Stuttgart and more.

The restaurant’s opening next June will coincide with the re-opening of an overhauled terminal 2 on June 4th 2014, with Heathrow arguing that the revamped space will be an “extraordinary new space in its own right” – perfect, considering that Blumenthal is a fan of all things extraordinary. Menu staples at the restaurant are set to include a twist on burgers and fish and chips, roast, chicken, pizza and much more, with some of the inspiration taken from his “Search for Perfection" television series, which looked at classic British dishes.

"I like the idea of having a great messy burger and a nice glass of red (wine)," he said in a telephone interview. The restaurant is also set to pioneer a number of cooking techniques, and act as a home to the first wood-fired oven in a British airport.

With other star chefs such as Gordon Ramsay already having set up restaurants in Heathrow terminals Blumenthal highlighted that the food offered at airports is undergoing a significant transformation. "The food offering in airports has improved that much - it used to be such a treat in business class to use the lounge but in fact you get much better food in general outside the lounges now than inside," he said.

Would you fly from Heathrow terminal 2 just to sample haute cuisine Heston-style? Wherever you are travelling to it is important to secure travel insurance in advance of your trip.
