Fly away with me: greater number of children than ever before travelling abroad

Young people in Britain are travelling more than ever before, according to a survey into the nation’s travel and holiday habits.

More than two thirds of children have been on an aircraft prior to their tenth birthday, claims the survey by travel firm easyJet. An increasing number of budget airlines and new air routes to destinations not served by traditional carriers during the last 15 years were listed as the major reasons.

While 67% of children have travelled abroad by the age of ten, many more have seen the rest of the world on a far more regular basis. A quarter of youngsters have travelled to foreign lands at least four times by the time they are due to start secondary school – traditionally when they reach the age of 11. But this was a completely different story to that of their parents, as almost one fifth said they did not travel as much as their children when they were the same age.

This figure dropped still further when grandparents were questioned, with slightly more than one-in-ten admitting to travelling abroad regularly. More than half of the parents questioned in the survey said they had never travelled abroad by the time of their tenth birthday.

Of all the holidays listed, beach holidays were the most popular for those heading abroad with their children. Parents who took their children to the beaches for sun, sand and sea accounted for 61% of the total holidaymakers looking for a week’s relaxation.

With more flights to European and global destinations available than ever before, it is easy to see why people are looking to escape and travel to more far-flung regions of the globe. As the population gets increasingly savvy about the logistics of flying abroad from a young age, it might also pay to realise the importance of securing travel insurance as well.
