Families favour city breaks over beaches

It used to be that the summer family holidays involved heading somewhere warm, throwing down the towel and sitting on the beach for a week or two. However, now it seems that the average British family holiday is a little more cultured, with 41% opting for a city break over a beach vacation. This is up from 38% the previous year.

The numbers choosing beach breaks are down from 43%, according to new figures from ABTA, the travel agents association. A spokesman for ABTA said: “Brits are incredibly lucky that hundreds of the most beautiful cities on the planet are just a short, affordable flight away.”

It also seems that the numbers preferring one type of holiday over another can be broken down into regions. People in Yorkshire take more city breaks than any other region. Those living in the Midlands tend to head for the coast, although this is not surprising perhaps as they are land locked most of the year. Sports tourism is also becoming popular, with many taking holidays to coincide with major events like the Olympics and World Cup.

Package holidays are also making a comeback, mainly thanks to the recession and many people tightening their belts when going away. Package holidays may offer better value for money and can be booked later in the year when people are surer of their finances. This is something that many people are increasingly having to think about when planning their holidays.

The top five city destinations across the world for Brits are Paris, Barcelona, Dublin, Rome and New York. In the UK, we all love to visit London, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Manchester and York.

No matter where you go on holiday this year, one thing always remains the same and that’s the need to get travel insurance. Wherever you go away to, there are risks to property and yourself that you should always bear in mind.
