No luxuries: Brits view holidays as essential

According to new holiday research carried out by travel agency body ABTA, Brits no longer view holidays as a luxury but rather see them as a necessity that can’t be done without.

Rather than going without their holidays each year people will cut back on gadgets, clothes, DIY, eating out and other expenditure. The survey asked them to prioritise their spending habits in order of the most important and holidays emerged as a key priority. One in five said that an overseas holiday was an absolute necessity and one in ten said they couldn’t do without a holiday in the UK. One in five people also said that they thought they would spend more on next year’s holiday than they had on this.

However, despite this news, it turns out that the average number of holidays taken by Brits in the last year had fallen slightly against the previous twelve months. UK holidaymakers took around 3.1 holidays a year overseas, falling from 3.5 in 2012.

Mark Tanzer, the chief executive of ABTA said: “It’s clear that Britons are still keen to preserve their main annual holiday.”

He added: “The heatwave undoubtedly had an impact on the lates market as after many poor summers in the UK people chose to enjoy the weather at home, which may go some way to explain the slight decrease in the number of holidays taken per person. However, there is more optimism for next year with a greater number of consumers anticipating that they will spend more on holidays than those anticipating they will spend less, which is a shift in attitudes compared with last year.”

So, doing without a holiday is not an option for many people. Likewise, traveling without the right travel insurance is also not considered a good idea by many either. Making sure you are adequately covered when you go abroad is essential for covering yourself should something unforeseen happen while you are away.
