UK Tourism Hits New Highs

While most of us are desperately trying to escape the UK for our annual holidays, it seems that an increasing number of foreign tourists are selecting this little island as their preferred holiday destination.

Figures released by the Office For National Statistics show that the amount of money spent in the country by foreign holidaymakers is up 11% on the same period in 2012, while August saw an 19% increase in visitors on any previous month in 2013. This all seems to suggest that, though most Brits prefer the sun, sea and sand of the Mediterranean, the UK is becoming an increasingly popular destination.

The information released also highlights the fact that at least £13.7 billion has been spent in the UK between the months of January and August, with this adding up to a whopping £20 billion over the last year. As the country tries to return to some semblance of economic recovery and put the disastrous recession of the last few years behind it, the news that the tourism industry is bringing in this kind of money will be music to a great many ears.

Not too surprisingly, the majority of visitors are arriving from the high spending markets of Latin America, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. This is to be expected due to the fact that Britain remains an expensive destination to visit for many holidaymakers around the world. However, news that the UK tourism industry is recovering so strongly can be considered somewhat surprising news. Though other travel industries around the globe continue to strengthen, with most developed countries reporting growth in the number of visitors arriving on their shores, the extent to which the UK travel market has rebounded is unparalleled.

As summer gives way to autumn and what is expected to be a poor winter, the news that the UK has had a busy tourist season is nothing but positive. Those involved in the industry will be hoping for similar numbers in 2014.

Visitors to the UK should organise travel insurance before they go, to ensure they have cover during their trip.
