UK holidaymakers’ visits to Croatia up by 24%

UK holidaymakers are descending on the EU’s latest member and the jewel of the Adriatic in their droves, according to the latest figures.

The latest tourism data released by the Croatian National Tourist Office (CNTO) has revealed that the number of Brits visiting the country for their annual stint in the sun has increased by 24% in a year-on-year comparison. 299,842 Brits enjoyed the charms of Croatia between January and August 2013, with 92,001 UK travellers heading to Croatian shores this August alone. The latter figure represents the highest on record since the 1990s, and is up by 23% compared to last year’s figures.

Commenting on the figures, Tonko Rilović, UK and Ireland Director of the CNTO, said: "We've had a fantastic summer season but there's still more to do if we're to reach our record-breaking visitor figure of 500,000 in 1990.

"The UK market is incredibly important to us and to maintain this growth we're looking to show British visitors that Croatia offers more than just stunning coastline. We plan to promote our historic cities, eight national parks and the packed calendar of music festivals all year round.”

Further figures from the CNTO revealed that Croatia also welcomed a staggering 9,131,905 foreign visitors during the first seven months of the year. This represents an increase of 6% compared to figures for January-August 2012, when 8,583,908 opted for a visit to Croatia for their dose of sun, sea and sand.

Mr Rilović also argued that Croatia would be working hard to remain a firm fixture on the tourist map into 2014.

"We will also look to strengthen our position as a top short-haul destination in 2014. Our joining the EU this year means it's even easier to travel to Croatia and at less than two and a half hours away from the UK, an affordable family-friendly holiday or an adrenaline-raising active break is actually much closer than you think," he added. If you are planning a visit to Croatia, remember to take out travel insurance in advance of your trip.
