Tanning emerges as Brit’s top holiday priority

Each year, millions of us jet off to different destinations all around the world for a much-needed holiday. What is the main reason you travel abroad? Perhaps you want to spend time with family, get away from work and relax.

However, a recent poll has found that the main reason 41% of Brits go on holiday is to get a tan. With the weather in the UK leaving a lot to be desired, going abroad gives holidaymakers the perfect opportunity to come back bronzed.

The survey, conducted by online travel agency, Sunshine, is part of ongoing research into what Brits enjoy doing on holiday. Over 2,000 UK adults that had been abroad in the past year were questioned about what they thought was the most important thing about going on holiday.

Participants were asked what their top priority was and were given the chance to either select an answer from a list or write their own. The results have surprised many, with relaxing thought to be the most popular before the poll. Sunshine found that 41% prioritised getting a tan over relaxing and spending time with loved ones – 22% and 14% respectively.

Other popular answers included holiday flings and romances (12%) or creating good memories (7%). Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings: “It seems a shame that so many people prioritise ‘getting a tan’ on holiday, when a trip abroad should be so much more than that.” Participants that gave ‘getting a tan’ as their main priority when on holiday were questioned further. It was found that six in 10 people were not happy with the tan they achieved on their last holiday – they wanted to have darker skin.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, one in 10 said that they did regret spending so long concentrating on topping up their tan, rather than making the most of their holiday. Of those that regretted trying to get a tan, 34% didn’t find it enjoyable. Whatever your reason for going on holiday, don’t forget to take out travel insurance before you go.
