Why holidays are for families not friends this year

Over recent years, there has been an increasing number of people going away with friends rather than family. However, this year the trend looks like it is reversing. Fewer and fewer of us are going away with the boys or girls and holidaying with partners, kids and parents.

One theory behind the numbers is that the recession is meaning more people are going away with their parents but this may not be the case. Apparently, 58 per cent of Brits say they would rather go away with the family than with their friends.

It seems that although we love our friends, the idea of spending an entire week together is not so appealing. In fact, 6 per cent of those asked said they would rather go away alone. Only 17 per cent said they would prefer to go abroad with friends.

The survey was carried out by Kayak, who found that a third of us would like to go abroad this summer to sunnier destinations, with 23 per cent wanting to stay at home and vacation in the UK. A substantial 48 per cent of us like to get away at least twice a year. The money we can now save on cheaper flights and last minute deals means that two holidays a year is not unusual as it once might have been.

Annie Wilson, the managing director of Kayak UK said: “Family holidays are a great way to reconnect and spend some quality time with kids and partners, and the results show that Brits are embracing their holiday time from work to do just that. However, there will probably always be a time and place for weekends away with friends. At Kayak we help make planning for any type of holiday as easy as possible, whether it’s America with the family or Malta with your friends.”

Although it seems that holiday trends might be changing, there is one holiday trend that should never alter too much. Wherever you go this summer, make sure you have travel insurance to protect yourself and your belongings on holiday.
