Brits head on holiday in record numbers

This weekend is set to be one of the busiest in the British holiday calendar. As the remaining few schools who haven’t done so, start to break up for the school holidays, millions of Brits are heading for airports, ferry ports and railway terminals as they head off on holiday.

Airports and tour operators say this will be the busiest weekend of the year, and all this follows a month when many Brits have already felt like they were on holiday thanks to some Mediterranean-style weather.

The most popular destinations are Spain, Greece, Turkey and Tunisia and with nearly half a million people set to pass through Heathrow alone, things are going to get busy. As well as the big airports, some of the smaller departure points are also going to be busy this year. A further 66,000 will be leaving from Birmingham, 70,000 from Newcastle and 50,000 from Bristol. With these sorts of numbers leaving, it’s hard to imagine if there will be anybody left.

With Spain being the most popular destination again, the resort of choice is also once again Malaga, followed by the Canary Islands and the Balearic islands of Majorca and Tenerife. Deputy PM Nick Clegg and his wife are heading to Olmedo, northern Spain where they holiday every year. According to a recent survey they are not the only ones returning to a favourite destination. A huge 63 per cent are returning to a place they have already been, with 28 per cent going back to last year’s destination.

The Association of British Travel Agents’ (ABTA) chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “This weekend sees the start of the main summer holiday getaway and it's one of the busiest of the year. Millions of holidaymakers will be heading off overseas with the Mediterranean countries attracting the lion's share of visitors.”

However, he added that many more would be staying at home saying:”The recent amazing weather at home has also given a great boost to domestic tourism and many ABTA members are reporting a surge in last-minute bookings for holidays throughout the UK.” Wherever you’re going, don’t forget your sun cream and travel insurance. You can never be too careful on holiday.
