Spain tops popular destination chart again

As the school holidays begin, millions of Brits are heading off on their annual summer holidays. Once again, as it has been a number of times in recent years, Spain is top of the list of popular destinations. Included within the Spanish portion of the survey are the islands of Majorca and Tenerife.

According to ABTA, which organised the survey, the other popular destinations include the Mediterranean countries of Greece, Turkey and Tunisia. However, the survey also highlighted that there had been an increased number of bookings for staycations, or those choosing to holiday right here in the UK. The recent heatwave might have had something to do with this, lifting people’s hopes that they will get weather that’s just as good here as they will abroad. .

Amongst holidays on British soil, the Lake District was popular, as were the traditional holiday resorts of Brighton, Blackpool and Bournemouth. The Channel Islands, seemingly offering something akin to a midpoint between the two types of holiday, were also popular.

The figures show that British airports are set to be very busy over the next few days and weeks. Up to 500,000 of us will be departing from Heathrow, with a further 278,000 from Gatwick, and 125,000 and 70,000 from Glasgow and Luton respectively.

In terms of affordability of foreign holidays, according to hotel comparison site Trivago, Thailand offered the cheapest rooms per night at an average of £33. However, this is probably compromised by more expensive flights.

So, once you’ve booked your travel insurance this year, where might you be going? Is Spain top of your list, is a cheap room in Thailand a draw, or are you staying right here in the UK? Wherever you go, the next few weeks are going to be busy as thousands of families set off around the world for a break.
