Holiday choices are inspired by TV

There are many reasons for going on holiday. You might be looking for culture or for sun. However, it seems that a significant proportion of Brits look no further than their TV screen when it comes to choosing a destination.

In a recent survey carried out by the Post Office, a fifth of Brits said they went on holiday to places they had seen in their favourite TV shows. A further 20 per cent said they hoped to go to the destination where their favourite shows were set in the next five years.

It has to be said that whilst this may be statistically true, many of the places mentioned in the survey had been popular destinations in their own right before TV shone the spotlight on them. For example, 39 per cent of the respondents said they would like to visit New York to see where Sex and the City and Seinfeld were filmed. While this maybe true, New York was hardly an unknown backwater before these shows were made there.

Other locations that were desirable thanks to TV were Hawaii (Charlie’s Angels and Baywatch), LA (Pretty Woman) and Rome (films La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday). There was one destination that could lay claim to the real influence of the big and small screen. Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films really did showcase the outstanding natural beauty of New Zealand and really put it on the tourist map.

The TV tourist is just one of seven new types of holidaymaker outlined by the Post Office’s survey. Other new kinds of traveller they discovered were the long haul lover, the camping fanatic, health trippers and Facebook boasters, whose sole aim of going on holiday seems to be to make others jealous.

It seems that it is no longer just enough to book some flights, accommodation and travel insurance; now there has to be an ulterior motive for going away.
