A nation of unhappy campers

The weather might have finally taken a turn for the better and the sun is shining, however, most of us Brits will be resisting the temptation to set up the tent.

Traditionally we think of ourselves as a nation of resolute campers. Brave and hardy souls who will spend the night under canvas whatever the weather but according to a new survey we are no longer such happy campers.

The survey, carried out by Holiday Extras, found that 90 per cent of people said that the camping holiday (either in a tent or caravan) is their least favourite form of break.

It seems we have fallen out of love with the campsite and most of us now fear the sight of tent poles and pegs. The idea that we should have to walk to the toilet block in the middle of the night or pull the sleeping bag up over our heads just to ward off the frost is no longer appealing.

However, it’s not just camping that we can’t stand. Breaks spent staying with family members are also far from our idea of a dream holiday. Only about one in ten had anything positive to say about a weekend spent with an uncle, aunt or cousin. Perhaps the most startling finding of the whole survey is that a massive 52 per cent of people said that after returning from a week’s holiday, they needed at least another week off work to recover from it.

So, what is the solution? It seems that the ideal holiday is to go somewhere where you’ll stay indoors (preferably with a toilet you don’t have to hike to) at a place where you aren’t related to anyone else. It’s also seems that two weeks away a more relaxing than one. So, what are you waiting for? Get the travel insurance sorted and book your ideal holiday now.
