Mobile phone charges drop for EU holidaymakers

Good news for holidaymakers this week with the introduction of a price cap on downloading data while travelling in EU countries. What this means for consumers is that looking at maps, checking emails and sending pictures while you’re away will be 36 per cent cheaper.

Using phones abroad has in the past been very expensive, often prohibitively so. It is something the European Commission has been investigating and trying to rectify for some years. The new regulations will see the cost of making a call fall by 17 per cent per minute and receiving calls will be cut by 12 per cent per minute. Sending a text will now also be 11 per cent cheaper.

Neelie Kroes, the EU Commission Vice President said: “The EU has to be relevant to people's lives. The latest price cuts put more money in your pocket for summer, and are a critical step towards getting rid of these premiums once and for all.”

Director General of The European Consumer Organisation, Monique Goyens, added: “The concept of charging to roam fundamentally contradicts the European Single Market. 72 per cent of travellers have said they limit their roaming calls for fear of cost and only 19 per cent believed data roaming prices to be fair. So this regulatory ramping down of prices is not just welcome, it’s necessary.”

All of which is great news for travellers. Even better news is that mobile roaming charges in the EU may be scrapped altogether in 2014.

At a time of financial crisis, it’s great that Questor can bring holidaymakers this good news as part of its ‘Be Holiday Savvy’ campaign. It seems like with reduced mobile phone charges and the availability of cheaper travel insurance, the cost of the summer holiday might be dropping. Great news if you’re thinking about getting away this summer.
