Is social media killing the holiday fling?

It used to be that the holiday fling was a rite of passage. An exciting but ultimately short-lived holiday romance that enlivened foreign travel. However, it seems that thanks to social media, more than half of us ‘check out’ our holiday fling on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter while we are on holiday. According to a survey by Lastdeals.co.uk, all the time we’re not smooching, we’re looking at their photos and seeing what they’ve been up to over the last few months.

A massive 32 per cent of the 18 to 35 year olds polled said that the things they discovered online meant they had already dumped their holiday partners by the time they had got home; hardly the romantic thing to do.

A further 28 per cent of those polled said that they checked whether their holiday fling was on Facebook when they got home and 41 per cent said they kept checking even after the relationship was supposed to be over.

However, the survey was not all doom and gloom. A surprising 10 per cent of all holiday romances last over a year and one in a thousand even ends up in marriage. Although, of those one on ten that last over a year, the overwhelming majority of them live closer than 40 miles apart.

Those in the 16 to 24 age group were more likely to fall for someone on holiday but the least likely to keep it going. The over 25s were the most likely to keep the holiday flame burning for longer. Callum Macdonald from Latedeals.co.uk said: “Holiday romances have always been about the excitement of being away from day-to-day life, but social media makes it easier to see more about a person's lifestyle at home - which is proving to put people off”.

However, if you’re looking for love, then maybe it’s a good idea to book some flights, some travel insurance and head off on holiday. You’re never know who you might meet. Just don’t check them out on Facebook.
